Probing chromatic onsets of gravitational wave overtones
نویسندگان
چکیده
The ringdown data of both GW150914 and GW190521\_074359 (GW190521r) show evidence supporting the presence overtone. Previous studies all adopt a fundamental assumption, which were motivated more by convenience than first principles, that overtone mode share same onset. In this work, for time we relax such aim to probe possible chromatic onsets these two components within GW190521r data. For events, bound onset lags be $\Delta t_0\geq 5M_f$ at probabilities $\geq 94.7\%$, where $M_f$ is mass remnant black hole formed in merger. This result moderately favours non-simultaneous excitation between ringdown.

Probing reheating temperature of the universe with gravitational wave background
Thermal history of the universe after big-bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) is well understood both theoretically and observationally, and recent cosmological observations also begin to reveal the inflationary dynamics. However, the epoch between inflation and BBN is scarcely known. In this paper we show that the detection of the stochastic gravitational wave background around 1Hz provides useful info...
متن کاملProbing neutron-star superfluidity with gravitational-wave data.
We discuss the possibility that future gravitational-wave detectors may be able to detect various modes of oscillation of old, cold neutron stars. We argue that such detections would provide unique insights into the superfluid nature of neutron-star cores, and could also lead to a much improved understanding of pulsar glitches. Our estimates are based on a detector configuration with several na...
متن کاملProbing the f (R) formalism through gravitational wave polarizations
The direct observation of gravitational waves (GW) in the near future, and the corresponding determination of the number of independent polarizations, is a powerful tool to test general relativity and alternative theories of gravity. In the present work we use the Newman-Penrose formalism to characterize GWs in quadratic gravity and in a particular class of f(R) Lagrangians. We find that both q...
متن کاملProbing seed black holes using future gravitational-wave detectors
Identifying the properties of the first generation of seeds of massive black holes is key to understanding the merger history and growth of galaxies. Mergers between ∼ 100M seed black holes generate gravitational waves in the 0.1–10Hz band that lies between the sensitivity bands of existing ground-based detectors and the planned space-based gravitational wave detector, the Laser Interferometer ...
متن کاملProbing the Gravitational Geon
The Brill{Hartle gravitational geon construct as a spherical shell of small amplitude, high frequency gravitational waves is reviewed and critically analyzed. The Regge{Wheeler formalism is used to represent gravitational wave perturbations of the spherical background as a superposition of tensor spherical harmonics and an attempt is made to build a non{singular solution to meet the requirement...
